The rhythm of daily life
Before the widespread use of personal clocks, the church bells created a regular, predictable routine for communities. 

• Timekeeping: Bells were rung to mark the time of day, sometimes even ringing the hour twice so that people working in distant fields would not miss it.
• Work and curfew: The bells would signal the beginning and end of the workday, as well as the nightly curfew.
• The Angelus: This Catholic devotion was performed at 6:00 a.m., noon, and 6:00 p.m., with bells calling the faithful to pause for prayer. 
  

Communication and community events
Beyond daily routine, specific bell patterns were used to convey important information and punctuate community life. 

• Births and baptisms: A celebratory peal of bells announced a new member of the community.
• Weddings: A joyful ringing would announce the union of a couple.
• Deaths and funerals: A solemn toll, or death knell, would announce a death and accompany the funeral procession.
• Public announcements: Bells gathered citizens to hear official proclamations.
• Emergency warnings: A rapid, single-note chime, known as the tocsin, was used to alert the community to dangers such as fire, flood, or invasion.
